Selfless Act

I am usually not thankful for -21° temperatures (-51°F when you include wind chill), but this cold spell allowed me to have breakfast with my daughter and catch this moving segment on the Today Show.

Carson Daly thanked his sister on air Wednesday for the selfless act that “literally saved [his] life.” This small act of courage and vulnerability had his sister in tears, and likely most of the viewing audience.

This reminds me of two powerful quotes:

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. – Wendy Mass

and

We might impress people with our strengths, but we connect with people through our weaknesses – Craig Groeschel

Vulnerability is often seen as weakness, but I fully agree with Brene Brown, and believe that it is rather a true sign of strength. If you have never seen her TED talk I would highly recommend you take a moment to watch it. We seldom know or understand what is happening in others lives, but I have found that when you open up and share a bit of your life with someone they reciprocate and share a bit of theirs. I believe it is this act of connection that brings out the best in all of us.

Whatever is going on in your life I hope you have the courage to share with someone, and in the process, build a meaningful relationship. If you ever want to talk please contact me anytime.

I truly wish you the best,
Douglas Diemel
